My Projects
I run a little village web forum for my TTRPG group. It's a fun little project. Started out with the theoretical plan to implement quickly in python and then learn Common-Lisp to reimplement it. The python implementation took longer to actually get through, but I actually have been making semi-steady progress through the Common Lisp books in the meantime. So maybe some day Soon™. Some parts of this website are written in lisp, so I've got some sort of a start already.
Other Stuff
Advent of Computing
This is a fascinating podcast! So much interesting history about early computers, languages, and systems. And the people behind them. Some of my favorite episodes so far:
- #2, The Demo, about some of the original thinking re: human/computer interfaces.
- #6, Digital Voices, about the deep history of text-to-speech.
- #9, Networking for a Nuclear War, the Soviets, and #13, Minitel, the French Network Connection, about the computer networks that didn't become the Internet.
- #19 and #20, the story of the PLATO educational systems.
- #28, Applesoft BASIC, Microsoft and Apple's First Collaboration, about the deep intertwined histories of Apple and Microsoft.
- #31 and #32, The Road to Transistors, especially the bits about the cryotron.
- #35, Analog Computing and the Automatic Totalisator, which is pretty bonkers, when you think about giant room-sized analog mechanical computers for horse betting,
The other episodes are really cool, too! Would definitely recommend this one to anyone who is interested in computers or the people that made them work.
